A restaurant POS has to move at service speed. Servers need to enter modifiers without walking back to a fixed station, bartenders need to open and close tabs without rebuilding checks, the kitchen needs readable orders, and guests need to see an accurate total before they pay. Diaz Solutions configures the hardware and workflow around the dining room, bar, counter, and kitchen—not around a generic device bundle.
Clover’s current restaurant materials document tableside orders and payments on Flex, table management, open tabs, credit-card preauthorization, split bills, kitchen routing, and customizable on-screen tip suggestions. Features, apps, offline behavior, connectivity, and pricing vary by device, software plan, processor, and restaurant configuration, so the final proposal lists what is included before installation.
Take Orders and Payments at the Table
Clover describes Flex as a mobile restaurant POS for tableside ordering. A server can enter the order near the guest, attach modifiers and notes, send the order into the configured kitchen workflow, monitor table status, and return to take payment. The built-in printer can produce a receipt, or the guest can receive one by email or text where supported.
Tableside service works only when the menu, modifiers, tables, permissions, printers, kitchen displays, wireless coverage, and software plan are configured as one system. Diaz Solutions loads the menu, tests routing from each service area, and trains staff on normal service plus the fallback process for a network interruption.
- Menu categories, modifiers, courses, and guest notes organized for quick entry
- Table map and server permissions matched to the floor plan
- Orders routed to the correct prep station, printer, or compatible kitchen display
- Tableside payment and receipt workflow tested before go-live
Automated Tip Calculations Guests Can Understand
Clover supports configurable on-screen tip suggestions. Preset percentages or dollar amounts can be displayed to the guest, and percentage suggestions are calculated from the designated tippable amount. “Automated tip calculation” here means the checkout device calculates those configured guest suggestions; it does not promise payroll allocation, tip pooling, or legal tip-distribution compliance.
The setup should make the base amount clear, preserve “No Tip” and custom-tip choices where the device requires them, and keep the receipt consistent with the guest’s selection. Restaurant management remains responsible for wage, pooling, and distribution practices. Any payroll or workforce feature is quoted and verified separately.
Open Bar Tabs and Close Checks Faster
Clover’s bar solution supports preauthorizing eligible credit cards to start tabs, splitting bills, and taking payment at the bar, table, or in the crowd on a portable Flex. A stationary Clover Station can anchor the bar while handhelds reduce trips between guests and the main screen.
Fast checkout depends on more than hardware. Diaz Solutions configures menu colors and categories, common modifiers, bartender permissions, tab naming, receipt behavior, tip prompts, and closeout procedures. Staff practice opening, transferring, splitting, and closing sample checks before the first live shift.
- Preauthorization and bar-tab settings confirmed with the processor and software plan
- Itemized split checks and separate receipts tested
- Portable payment path checked across the bar and guest areas
- End-of-night batch and open-tab review assigned to a manager
Cash Discount and Dual-Pricing Menus That Show the Real Total
A restaurant cannot rely on a small sign at the register if the menu shows only a lower cash amount and a higher credit-card total appears later. New York requires the credit-card price to be clear before purchase. A dual-price menu can show cash and card amounts together; a cash-discount presentation can post the higher card price and clearly offer the lower cash amount. Printed menus, menu boards, online menus, QR ordering, guest displays, and receipts must stay aligned.
A properly implemented program may offset eligible credit-card processing expense, but software, equipment, connectivity, chargebacks, and other costs can remain. Credit-card surcharge rules are separate: Visa currently caps a U.S. surcharge at the lower of the merchant discount rate or 3%, requires advance acquirer notice, and does not permit debit or prepaid surcharges. Use the New York surcharge compliance guide as the operating checklist before prices go live.
- Print or display the applicable price before the guest orders
- Update online ordering and QR menus at the same time as dining-room menus
- Confirm tax, gratuity, service-charge, debit, and prepaid handling with the processor and advisers
- Run sample cash, credit, debit, split-tender, void, refund, and tip transactions
Choose the Clover Setup Around the Service Model
A full-service dining room may need a Station, Flex handhelds, kitchen routing, and table management. A neighborhood bar may prioritize tabs, portable checkout, and a fast counter station. A quick-service restaurant may need a compact register, customer display, kitchen printer, online ordering, and preset tips. Clover apps and service plans differ, so every integration and recurring fee belongs on the quote.
Diaz Solutions documents which hardware is purchased or placed, which software plan is required, which features depend on third-party apps, and what the processing agreement costs. If the restaurant already uses Clover, Santos checks whether the hardware can be supported under the proposed processor before promising a reprogramming or transfer.
Local Installation Before the First Busy Shift
Installation includes menu loading, tax and tender setup, device placement, network checks, printer or kitchen-display routing, tip screens, user permissions, test tickets, refunds, receipts, and manager closeout. Training follows the actual roles on the schedule: host, server, bartender, cashier, kitchen, and manager.
Diaz Solutions is based in Brentwood and serves restaurants and bars in Bay Shore, Central Islip, Hempstead, and communities across Nassau and Suffolk counties. Start with a statement and current POS bill so the comparison includes processing, hardware, software, apps, and support in one total.
Restaurant and Bar POS FAQ
Can Clover take orders and payments at the table?
Yes. Clover’s restaurant materials describe Flex as a mobile POS for taking tableside orders and payments. The exact ordering, table, kitchen-routing, connectivity, and offline features depend on the selected Clover software plan, apps, device, and processor configuration.
Does Clover calculate suggested tips automatically?
Clover supports preset percentage or dollar tip suggestions and calculates percentage suggestions from the configured tippable amount. That checkout feature is separate from payroll, tip pooling, wage compliance, and employee distribution.
Can a bar preauthorize cards and split checks?
Clover’s current bar solution documents credit-card preauthorization for tabs and itemized split bills. Availability and setup depend on the processor, software plan, hardware, and account configuration, so both workflows are tested before launch.
How do I show cash and card prices on a New York menu?
Show the higher credit-card price clearly before ordering, either by displaying cash and card prices together or by posting the card price and advertising a real cash discount. Keep printed, digital, QR, customer-display, and receipt prices consistent, and review the complete setup under current state, card-brand, and processor rules.
Does a zero-fee restaurant program eliminate every POS cost?
No. A compliant dual-pricing or cash-discount program may offset eligible credit-card processing expense, but restaurant software, hardware, apps, internet or cellular service, chargebacks, and other account costs can remain.
